Where are people buying CBD edibles in Australia from?

It is very difficult to buy CBD edibles in Australia. Medical cannabis has only been legal in Australia for a relatively short period of time (since 2016), resulting in the availability of a limited range of products.

These same products are often wildly overpriced. As a result, many people in Australia choose to buy their CBD gummies online.

There are online CBD suppliers in Europe and the US who will ship their products to Australia. Many of them offer guaranteed delivery of their CBD products. However, importation of these products is illegal and they can be seized by Australian Border Force on arrival.

Are CBD edibles legal in Australia?

CBD edibles are medically legal in Australia, although CBD products, such as CBD oil, are tightly regulated. CBD is a schedule 4 prescription-only medicine under the Department of Health’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Patients wishing to consume CBD edibles must have a valid prescription from their doctor. All GP’s must have obtained the relevant Commonwealth and/ or state approvals before they can prescribe their patients CBD-containing medications.

In Australia, CBD can only be sold if the content of the other cannabinoids does not exceed 2%. Or, the highest permitted ratio of CBD to other cannabinoids is 49:1. This is also true for the CBD oil used in edibles.

Cannabis legislation varies state by state in Australia, to read more about specific state legalities check out our article CBD oil in Victoria.

Why choose CBD gummies over other CBD products?

When it comes to consuming CBD gummies, there are many different options available. There is no best way to consume CBD, but rather it comes down to personal preference.

So, why buy CBD gummies over other CBD products?

No preparation: CBD gummies come in your required dosage, and you won’t be left wondering how many drops of CBD oil should I take.

Easy to eat: People who do not like, or have trouble swallowing capsules could find cannabis gummy bears easier to consume. Gummies now come in an array of different flavours. They are also particularly beneficial for those who do not like the earthy taste of CBD.

Easy to dose: As the gummies come in predetermined doses there is no measuring or droppers required.

Discreet: For those who wish to consume their medical cannabis products discreetly, gummy bears could be an excellent choice. It is possible to ingest the medication anywhere, whereas with vaping or smoking, the patient may need to find a designated area.

Long-lasting: Eating gummies means that the CBD oil is absorbed via the body’s digestive system. This produces a slower breakdown of organic material, resulting in longer-lasting effects than other consumption methods.

What are the health benefits?

CBD oil contains anti-inflammatory properties, which have ‘the potential ability to mitigate the painful symptoms of countless human discomforts’ [1].
It can improve focus and clarity by interacting with the body’s dopamine receptors [2].

CBD oil has the potential to reduce chronic pain in the body, and was found to be useful in relieving the symptoms of arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Studies have shown that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in the brain to trigger a pain-relieving response [3, 4, 5].

Studies have shown that CBD oil has an effect on cortisol release [6, 7]

Cortisol is the stress hormone. Having high cortisol levels has been associated with poor sleep quality and broken sleeping cycles.  Consuming CBD therefore possibly acts as a sedative by affecting the release of cortisol [8].

CBD’s relationship with cortisol can also reduce or eliminate anxiety by promoting a feeling of calm.

Are there any side effects?

Most users of CBD report little to no side effects from their medication. However, CBD oil can be the cause of dry mouth.

CBD should only be taken alongside other medication with your doctor’s consent. CBD has the potential to ‘decrease your liver’s ability to process pharmaceutical medications’ [9]. This has the potential to weaken or negate the intended effects of a patient’s other pharmaceutical medication.

Other reported side effects with no clinical support are diarrhea, fatigue, drowsiness and a reduced appetite [10].

Should I buy CBD isolate or full-spectrum CBD?

Full spectrum CBD means that the consumable product contains all of the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD isolate refers to pure CBD without any other cannabinoids.

Research has shown full-spectrum CBD to be more effective due to something known as the ‘entourage effect’. This means that all the different cannabinoids (the entourage of CBD) interact with the body to enhance the effects of the CBD [11].

This does not render pure CBD isolate a vastly inferior product, but it is important to know the difference.

You may also come across the term broad spectrum CBD. This refers to full spectrum CBD that has had the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC – the psychoactive component of cannabis) removed. Even if the THC in full-spectrum CBD oil is not at a high enough level to alter states of consciousness, it could show up on a drug screening. If you are subject to medical drug tests, then perhaps you should consider a broad spectrum product.

What are the best CBD gummy bears?

While it is still not possible to buy CBD gummy bears in Australia, there is a good range of products available online from Europe and the US.
Many of these overseas companies will ship their products to Australia. And many guarantee delivery of these CBD products.

Below we look at three of the best gummies products based on their cannabinoid content.

Please note hemp gummies are NOT the same the same as CBD gummies!

Best full spectrum product: Charlotte’s Web

They remain one of the most trusted brands in the CBD market. Their gummies range consists of the Calm, Sleep and Recovery gummies, and all come with added ginger and turmeric for extra anti-inflammatory properties. Check out their online shop here.

Best broad-spectrum product: Joy Organics

True to their name, Joy Organics do their best to create their gummies using only organically-sourced ingredients that do not contain any nasties. The gummy bears come in two different flavours: green apple and strawberry lemonade. Find out more about Joy Organics by visiting their website here.

Best CBD isolate product: Penguin

The people at penguin have removed all other cannabinoids to ensure no THC remains in their gummies (pure CBD isolate). They come with a combination of sweet and sour crystals. Many reviewers believe that the gummies from Penguin are even better than the real deal. Find potential suppliers and view their online store here.

We have found some suppliers in Australia do include THC in their gummies.
