You probably already know that CBD is nature’s antidote for many common conditions such as pain, inflammation, insomnia and seizures…the list goes on.

But did you know that CBD may be beneficial in the bedroom with effects ranging from increased lubrication, boosted libido, decreased sex-related anxiety, and alleviating painful conditions that impact sex?

While we never like to tout CBD as a cure-all, it really does seem to deliver better sleep, better mental wellbeing and better sex for many people.

Let’s get down to business and find out how CBD lubricant can improve your sex life and where you can buy your very own CBD-infused lube. We also review a few CBD lubes from Australia.

The ins and outs of CBD and sex

Firstly, you can still consume CBD sublingually before slipping between the sheets; it can help enhance the intimate experience by reducing anxiety and decreasing pain, allowing you to relax into the moment and focus on pleasure.

So, how does CBD-infused lube work exactly? Glad you asked.

Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in reproductive organs and sexual tissues. When applied topically or internally, CBD works to relax blood vessels, which increases blood flow to the vagina, increasing sensitivity and natural lubrication [1].

But the benefits don’t end there. Our brains are the most powerful sexual organ in our body and play a primary role in sexual function. They also happen to be heavily populated with cannabinoid receptors as well.

“Cannabinoid receptors have also been localized to other areas of the brain that control sexual function, including the hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Serum levels of endocannabinoids have been correlated with both subjective and objective measures of arousal.” [2]

So whether you’re tired, anxious, stressed or dealing with pain and a lack of lubrication, CBD is uniquely equipped to address concerns related to your sexual health and wellbeing.

CBD oil for sex: how can it help?

CBD for Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual health concern, affecting approximately 40% of Australian men [3].

ED can be driven by either a physical or psychological condition and can cause undue stress and anxiety and contribute to low self-confidence.

The good news is that CBD may be able to help.

A 2014 review of studies noted that Ayurvedic practitioners had successfully recommended cannabis, both CBD & THC, as a treatment for ED [4].

Additionally, according to a small 2017 study, a single dose of CBD can reduce blood pressure. The study was focused on blood flow in the heart, not the penis.

ED is strongly correlated with heart disease and narrowing of the blood vessels, so it’s entirely plausible that CBD may inadvertently help ED that’s linked to heart disease. Of course, more research needs to be done to draw any firm conclusions.

CBD for low sex drive (marijuana lube may be the answer!)

You’re tired, stressed and after a long week negotiating kids, work and the hustle and bustle of life, getting down and dirty is the last thing on your mind.

Perhaps THC can help here.

A 2017 study found that cannabis consumption (the kind that gets you high) lit up areas of the brain associated with sexual arousal, suggesting that a quick puff before bed might get you in the mood.

What about THC lube, though?

While most research suggests that a lube containing THC won’t make you feel high, there are anecdotal stories of women experiencing mellow highs from applying a cannabis lube.

If cannabis lube contains THC, partners should be careful during oral sex as it may be consumed which can lead to unintended effects.

Despite all of this, many women are reporting that THC lube significantly increases natural lubrication and intensifies pleasure.

“THC is absorbed through the mucous membranes that are in high concentration in a woman’s vagina. Once applied and absorbed, THC acts locally on the cannabinoid receptors, much like an edible. Functionally, the THC dilates the capillaries and increases blood flow in the smallest blood vessels in our body—this enhanced microcirculation magnifies sensitivity and sensation.”

CBD for painful sex

There are many reasons women experience painful sex (Dyspareunia). Things like lack of lubrication, fluctuating sex hormone levels, psychosexual trauma, and other painful physical conditions such as vaginismus, chronic pelvic pain, and endometriosis can contribute to uncomfortable sexual experiences.

New research, plus thousands upon thousands of women across the globe, are now realising that CBD can offer natural pain relief from these conditions during sex.

Before we go any further, if you have vulvar/vaginal or pelvic pain during or after sex, don’t dismiss it. It’s important to rule out serious conditions or infections.

But if you’ve been down the medical path without resolution, perhaps CBD can be the soothing helping hand you need.

A recent study by CBD and hemp resources website Remedy Review explores CBD’s Effects on Sex. Surveying 5,398 Americans, researchers focused on 502 participants who said they consumed CBD for sex with their current or previous partner.

The survey found 26% of participants used CBD to alleviate pain and discomfort after sex. Of those, 39% found CBD “moderately to very” effective, 59% found it “slightly to somewhat” effective, and only 2% found it non-effective [5].

Many women suffering from painful gynaecological conditions have also found relief using CBD suppositories.

CBD & the BIG ‘O’

In the same study, surveyed adults said that using CBD before or during sex increased sexual satisfaction.

• 72% of men and 76% of women said they experienced stronger orgasms.
• Men lasted 31% longer before orgasm.
• Women reported being 33% faster to orgasm.

Female orgasms can sometimes be elusive and complex, and up to 21% of Australian women aged 20-64 say they cannot reach orgasm [6].

Additionally, vaginal orgasms can be hard to achieve for many, with only about 20% of women having frequent orgasms through vaginal penetration. Many women need other types of stimulation to achieve orgasm.

A 2019 study looked into the effects of cannabis extracts on female orgasms and found that female orgasms increased in both intensity and duration when CBD oil was used [7].

While the evidence is still lacking, many women report that THC lube helps them achieve more intense orgasms in a shorter timeframe.

The best cannabis lube in Australia

As you probably know, accessing CBD oil in Australia is a little complex. You either need to go down the medical pathway and get a script from your GP, or you can wait until we eventually see low-dose CBD oil become available in pharmacies.

But seriously, who has time for that? We’ve just learnt how important CBD can be for our sex lives, and we’re ready to get busy.

While there are a plethora of CBD and THC lube products available in countries like the US, many of these companies, unfortunately, don’t ship to Australia.

So, we’ve done the research and found two cannabis lube products available right here in Australia.

The other thing to consider is to try making your own CBD lube. It’s as easy as mixing your cannabis product into an organic coconut-based oil.

Whether you prefer CBD or THC, you can whip up your lube in no time. The only thing to remember is that because it’s an oil-based lubricant, it may damage the condom.

OK, the best Aussie CBD lubes are coming up in 3…2…1…GO!

Soma Medicinals

This amazing business aims to educate, facilitate healing and provide access to the powerful healing properties of plant medicine.

The Soma Medicinals all-natural broad-spectrum (no THC) CBD lubricant is designed to enhance intimacy and pleasure in the bedroom, whether it’s just yourself or with a partner.

The 100ml bottle contains super clean ingredients perfect for applying to our most delicate and sensitive areas; an organic coconut MCT oil combined with 200mg of broad-spectrum CBD will have you reaching new heights of pleasure.

Soma also sells 500mg broad-spectrum CBD suppositories, designed to soothe menstrual cramps and pain associated with vaginismus, endometriosis, vulvodynia and even lower back pain.

The suppositories are a beautiful addition to a range of products designed specifically for women’s sexual health, well-being and pleasure.

O-Shot CBD Arousal Oil

This product contains a unique blend of botanicals designed to heighten sexual pleasure for more intense orgasms.

Alongside broad-spectrum CBD oil, there are other warming and stimulating ingredients such as peppermint, cinnamon and ginger root oil suspended in a base of organic coconut MCT oil.

The full effect of the oil can be felt within 15 minutes of application and intensifies sexual pleasure, makes sex more comfortable and enhances both vaginal and clitoral stimulation.

This arousal oil does have a few botanicals that can be warming or tingling, so if you’re super sensitive, it may not be suitable for you.

These canna-aphrodisiacs will definitely add a little bit of spice to your nightlife (or morning or afternoon), perhaps all of the above. Enjoy!

CBD lube in Australia: Is it worth your money?

While CBD lube may be a bit more expensive than a trusty bottle of KY, it’s hard to go past the added benefits that CBD can bring to the bedroom.

  2. Chantelle

Hi I’m wanting to try some lube, but I’m pregnant what is safe for me to use please?

    • Hinterland co.

      Hey Chantelle,

Unfortunately, we can’t give any personalised medical advice; as you’re pregnant, it’s best to consult a doctor before consuming CBD, even via a lube product. While CBD has a very good safety profile, there isn’t a lot of data about whether it has any impact on unborn babies. In the meantime, coconut oil is an excellent natural lubricant and can even help restore the skin’s barrier function. Hope this helps.
